Topic ETHNIC RESEARCH: THE AUTHOR’S ROLE
Summary The article examines the role of the researcher in provoking ethnic renaissance, which is characterized by such processes as actualization of historical memory, increase of ethnic self-awareness, addressing ethnicity in search of one’s positioning, preserving and revitalizing elements of traditional culture. The relationship between the researcher and the studied community is analyzed in the context of ethical issues and affects such aspects as the degree of involvement, “repatriation” of research materials, and auto-ethnography. Given the fact that the researcher is an active participant of the study, it is necessary to analyze your own role in this process and focus on those points that may have a direct or indirect impact on the community being studied. A constant exchange of knowledge takes place between the researcher and the studied people: “repatriation” or publication of the collected materials can become an instrument for activating the ethnocultural potential and for generating ethnic stereotypes as well. In the process of a long-term observation, while building trusting relationships, one can observe a gradual actualization of interest in one’s own culture and the resumption of some traditional practices; at the same time one can become an involuntary hostage to the personal interests of the studied population. The experience of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug — Ugra is given as an example, which is due to the large number of archaeological and ethnographic expeditions carried out on its territory and the close interaction of researchers with indigenous peoples living there.
Keywords ethnic renaissance, ethnicity actualization, “repatriation” of data, ethics of fieldwork, participant observation
