Topic | RUSSIA’S CULTURAL LANDSCAPES IN HISTORICAL ASPECT |
Summary | The article considers the cultural landscape of the Upper Don shores formed under Peter the Great during the construction of Ivanovsky channel and subsequently changed in the process of ongoing anthropogenic intervention. A brief outline of the channel’s history is given. Late (midsecond half of the 20th century) landscape changes due to industrial brown coal mining developed in this territory are taken into account. Cultural activities are considered both as a cause and as a result of the landscape remaking. The author identifies the sources and objectives of the impact on the environment and demonstrates its consequences. The most important anthropogenic factors affecting the transformation of the landscape are considered. The forms of reflection are listed: in the landscape — cultural activity, in the perception of man, in his individual worldview — cultural landscape. Evidence of a conscious perpetuation of historical events (commemoration), including through cultural impact on the landscape, is examined. It is shown how the mass notion of historical events has been changed, including under the influence of their interpretations in fiction (using the example of A. Platonov’s story “Epiphanian gateways”). The cultural landscape is also considered as a historical source: on the material of the Upper Don it is shown what information and how can be obtained in the fi eld study of landscapes. The data of studies conducted during the expeditions along the channel route are presented, in which the author of the article took part. | ||
