Topic ETHNICITY IN THE DIGITAL SPACE
Summary This study examines ethnocultural transformations in the digital environment, focusing on the adaptation of ethnic groups to urban settings through cyberethnicity and virtual communities. The research covers regions of Kazakhstan (Akmola, Karaganda, and Ulytau) and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in Russia (Yakutsk, Namsky, Megino-Kangalassky, and Khangalassky uluses). The central issue is the transformation of ethnic identity under globalization, urbanization, and digitalization. Cyberethnicity is viewed as a key mechanism for preserving and reinterpreting ethnic identity in the digital urban context. Special attention is given to repatriates — kandases, ethnic Kazakhs returning from rural areas of Uzbekistan, China, Mongolia, and Russia — who integrate into in the urban environment mainly through digital platforms. The study also considers the Sakha people of Yakutia, whose growing digital presence reflects complex processes of integration into urban and suburban milieus. Digital technologies facilitate this integration, fostering transformation into hybrid forms of identity. Methodologically, the study applies content analysis, qualitative and quantitative sociology, comparative and cultural-historical analysis, and network analysis of online ethnic communities. This interdisciplinary approach reveals how digital spaces mediate the transformation and reproduction of ethnic identity in contemporary urban contexts.
