Topic
Summary Among the finds discovered during the study of the elite burial mound no. 7 of the Sargat culture at the Tartas-2 site, there is an upper part of the millstone. This is the first time such an artifact has been found on a closed complex in the Baraba forest-steppe. The tool dates back to the 7th century BC. The paper presents the results of its experimental and traceological study, as well as the analysis of the remaining residues of processed products. The millstone dimensions are 31 × 31 × 8.5 cm; in its central part there is a through rounded hole with a diameter of 6 cm. On one side there are three pits that served as a receptacle for a part that creates a torque. Shallow, haphazardly arranged dimples are hollowed out on the reverse side to create a rubbing surface. It is assumed that the product was used for processing relatively dry materials. Starch grains of 4 types were found in the resulting wash from its surface: barley (Hordeum sp.), lily (Liliaceae Juss.) or nightshade (Solanaceae Juss.), millet (Panicum sp.) or bristle (Setaria sp.), and wheat, possibly spelt (Triticum dicoccum). The discovery of the millstone testifies to the familiarity of the Sargat people with sufficiently developed agriculture. Whether the identified remains of cereals were obtained by the local population in the south of the West Siberian Plain or, together with the millstone, are the results of contacts with residents who lived in the steppe regions of modern Kazakhstan remains a question.
