| Summary | Russian literature of the 19th century is replete with stories, poems, essays about the life and foreign peoples living in different parts of the vast Russian Empire. Especially popular were works about the peoples of the Caucasus, Ukraine, the Urals, and the Baltic lands. However, the Bashkir region, due to its geographical location between Asia and Europe, also received attention from writers and poets. Pyotr Mikhailovich Kudryashev was one of those who turned to the Bashkir theme. Following the pioneer in this direction, a little-known serf writer Timofey Belyaev from the Orenburg province, P. Kudryashev drew upon the folklore and ethnography of the Bashkir people. He was the author of a story and a number of poems written on folklore motifs. The article examines the writer’s essay “Precisions and Superstitions of the Bashkirts” (1826) which reflected the ethnographic life, mythological views and revealed the features and uniqueness of the described prejudices of the people. In the essay, there were certain discrepancies in the understanding of the functions and actions of sorcerers (fortunetellers, “sikhirchi” and others) with materials recorded in Bashkir folklore studies in later periods. However, this does not in any way diminish the work of Pyotr Kudryashev, who left valuable material about the spiritual heritage of the Bashkir people, collected knowledge about the ethnographic picture of their life and worldview. | ||
