| Summary | The article analyzes the causes of the decline of the nobility in the Grand Duchy of Finland, which led to their voluntary renunciation of estate-based representation in the legislative advisory Diet. The Finnish nobility’s abandonment of the remaining estate privileges was driven by several interrelated factors stemming from significant socio-economic changes in the Grand Duchy during the second half of the 19th century (industrialization, the emergence of political parties, the issue of landless peasants—known as the torpar question—and the conflict between the Svecomans and Fennomans). The nobility as an estate gradually lost its position in society. The increasing complexity of the bureaucratic apparatus significantly altered its social composition, and belonging to the nobility ceased to hold exclusive importance for one’s career. At first glance, the secularization of Finnish society led to the nobility’s reluctance to replenish the ranks of the clergy. Ownership of hereditary estates as the basis of prosperity lost its significance for many noble families: few were able to transform their landholdings into profitable enterprises. The inevitability of adapting to new conditions prompted the search for new spheres of activity. Occupations such as telegraph operator, accountant, nurse, and schoolteacher became attractive alternatives, unlike a military career (which, however, was discouraged for political reasons). Increasingly frequent inter-estate marriages gradually blurred the line between the noble and bourgeois estates. Involvement in political struggle during the so-called Russification policies at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries accelerated this process, culminating in the 1906 Diet with the nobility’s consent to relinquish estate-based representation. | ||
